The Sticky Fingers of Time

Published by normanbates under 1 Edit This

Hilary Brougher’s debut with the Sticky Fingers of Time wasn’t bad. A film which was supposed to take place in both the 50s and present time was pulled off well. The film consisted of unknown actors and actresses which did a great job. Brougher both wrote and directed the film as a debut, and I believe it was a success. The one thing I did not like about the film is the part when the villain explains their motives. I think it is really annoying in films when the protagonist meets the antagonist just to hear a lecture on why they are so evil. Other than that scene, the film was really interesting. The film kept me thinking afterwards. Good original psychological thriller from Brougher, C+.

Flashbacks of a Fool

Published by normanbates under 1 Edit This

Flashbacks of a fool is a story about a washed up movie star played by Daniel Craig. This is the first film that I have seen from Baillie Walsh. I have to say that I was impressed due to the fact that the film lacked density. It’s obvious that Walsh has major talent. The story ended so abruptly that I ended up wanting more. Great story, but there was not enough background information on the characters. Walsh tries to do this by taking us back in time, but unfortunately when the flashback ended, I had even more questions about Joe. Decent film, I just needed more. Having said that, the scene with the song by Roxy Music during the flashback was a really cool scene. I cant get that scene out of my head. This film gets a C.

El Topo

Published by normanbates under 1 Edit This

Oh my gosh, where to begin with El Topo? Alejandro Jodorowsky made a very original film. However, this film is not for everyone and when I mean everyone, I mean like 4% will like it. Although I am not a huge fan after seeing this film, I can definitely appreciate it. This is what you see among directors with a cult following. Just like David Lynch, Jodorowsky is in a league of his own. This is definitely one of those word of mouth films. Really creative piece of work and I tip my cap off to him and his following, but this film is not my cup of tea. Having said that, I think that every film guy should watch at least one of his films.

Watchmen

Published by normanbates under 1 Edit This

This film had so much potential to be a classic. After talking to many Watchmen fans about the story, I was hyped. This is typical, because I constantly over hype upcoming films in my mind only to be disappointed later on. The film started out great, but eventually started to get silly. I should have seen this coming because 300 sucked too. The ending was pretty cool however, by I credit the original writer and not the director. It’s nice to see that the smartest man in the world is indeed the smartest, otherwise not worth watching again. I want those 3 hours back. I now see why this graphic novel is labeled as “un-filmable”. This film gets a D-.

I Love You, Man

Published by normanbates under 1 Edit This

This is another film with Paul Rudd and Jason Segel. It’s safe to say that they did it again! This film was hillarious. Hats off to Paul Rudd in pulling off this character. In the film, he is this awkward guy with nothing but “girlfriends”. When he finally meets Sydney, he tries to turn into one of the guys. His impressions are horrible and his nicknames for Sydney are even worse, but it was so hillarious. Excellent premise, they show why they are at the top of the comedy game at the moment. Where we sit now, it looks like they will be at the top for a long time.

Baraka

Published by normanbates under 1 Edit This

This is a film with no dialogue and beautiful shots that captures the message intended. Director Ron Fricke takes us into the world of many countries that does not crave the material things that we do. He shows us people that are digging through the things that we throw away, and they are having fun doing it. They are trying to live out of necessity, something that we take for granted. Whenever Fricke takes us to a large city, it is fast pace with people walking past each other without a glance. This is the opposite of the small villages where people are genuine and innocent. Brilliant film with no dialogue, but effectively sends us a message. This film easily gets an A.
