Favorite Films Series: 10) Memento

Published by normanbates under 1 Edit This

Memento movie poster
Number 10 on my list of favorite movies is Memento directed by Christopher Nolan. This movie is indeed one of a kind. This is the film that put Christopher Nolan on the map before the Batman films. It also stars Guy Pearce along with some other unknowns. A story about revenge. A man’s wife is murdered and he wants to return the favor to the guy that did this. All he knows is that this guy’s name is John G. along with the many clues that he has tattooed on his body. The coolest thing about the film is that it is showed backwards, with the next scene leading up to the one prior. This film is an unbelievable piece of work. For those of you that have never seen it, I guarantee it will knock you on your ass. Definitely, one of the most creative ideas on how to present a story. Christopher Nolan shows why he is the director that he is today.

Happy Easter!!!

Published by normanbates under 1 Edit This

Hello, I hope everyone is enjoying their Easter so far today. Today is a better day than ever to hangout with the ones you love. When you are doing this, might as well pop in a movie. For today, lets watch something cheerful. I am using this time to do this as well. I will not be watching a new movie though. I will probably pop in something that will make me laugh and keep me in good spirits until Monday morning when we must resume with our lives. I’m thinking Old School, Wedding Crashers, There’s Something about Mary, or Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I hope you all have a happy Easter. Take Care.

Marley & Me

Published by normanbates under 1 Edit This

This was one of those films that people are afraid to criticize. I’ll put myself in the same book because this dog had so much personality. I would feel like the biggest jerk to say that the film sucked. I didn’t though, most of the characters in the film had depth to them. I feel that this film was not so much about Marley himself, but how Marley enhanced their lives. I really cool idea of a film, but it reminded me of Old Yeller and how I could not keep myself from crying. Yeah I said it, I cried. But I dare anyone to watch this film and not see the water flowing. Great film for the family, but not not too solid of a film, C+. Having said that, I have yet met a person that did not like this movie

Elegy

Published by normanbates under 1 Edit This

This film was a film that was pretty underrated last year. Penelope Cruz and Ben Kingsley was a surprisingly good couple in the film. What started of as an awkward and creepy sexual relationship, turns into true love between the two main characters. We also got to see Dennis Hopper as a supporting player in the film. Great cast, great story, and cinematography. I think that this was the gems of last year, but was overshadowed by the likes of Slumdog Millionaire and Milk. I recommend that people go rent this movie, you will not be disappointed. The film gets a B+.

Edge of Love

Published by normanbates under 1 Edit This

This film stars Kiera Kightley, Sienna Miller, and Matthew Rhys who plays the poet Dylan Thomas. This film had fantastic acting and even better cinematography, but the film does not finish as you would predict. We see Dylan and Vera, two old friends that meet again. We find out they were once lovers and never seem to let go of one another. Vera befriends Caitlin, Dylan’s film. The two become great friends. When Dylan continues to make passes at Vera, you think that she is going to leave her husband. Vera and Caitlin’s friendship begins to deteriorate and then the film falls apart. The film starts off so strong, but I don’t think that John Maybury knew how he wanted it to end. They film ends up all over the place and you forget what the film was about in the first place. Great looking film, but the writing needed more, C.

Righteous Kill

Published by normanbates under 1 Edit This

It is safe to say that Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are way too old to play these kind of roles. I couldn’t help but laugh when they were trying to act like bad asses during the film. Avnet put together one of the worst films that I have seen in a while. He tries to create this vigilante who writes really lame poetry for each murder he commits. This just did not work. He tries to build up this enormous twist at the end of the film, but you can spot it fairly early in the film. The film had no imagination. Avnet took the same characters that De Niro and Pacino played in their best films, and threw them into his ridiculous film. Not even the two best actors can save this film. I hate giving F’s, but Avnet gives me no choice.

What Just Happened

Published by normanbates under 1 Edit This

This film star Robert De Niro who plays one of Hollywood’s top Producers. What seems to be this extravagant job, is really a lot of dirty work behind the scenes. I really like the perspective of the film. What we perceive of the movie business is glamour, we think this is the greatest field to work in. What the film shows is egotistic filmmakers and actors being told what to do by business types who have no background in film to begin with. Then these filmmakers are trying to be creative, others are trying to sensor him. This was the perfect film for De Niro at this time. He is no longer a bad ass. Really cool film and excellent direction from Barry Levinson. My only problem with the film is the side relationships with the main character’s broken family relationships. I felt that they did not flow with the movie. Otherwise, this movie was hilarious. I give this film a B-.

Adventureland

Published by normanbates under 1 Edit This

Adventureland
Greg Mottola had a huge task ahead of him in the follow-up to Superbad. This time, he brings in a whole new cast except for Bill Hader who played officer Slater in Superbad. I was thinking that the film would be the same type of humor, but I was wrong. But I was wrong in a good way because that would not have worked for this film. The film did not need cheap laughs to make it a great film. This film in one of my favorites of 09 so far. I just thought everything was pulled off perfectly. The cast couldn’t have been better. Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart were a really good team. Also, the characters in the film had so much depth, which really made this a good story. Cinematography was good, the writing was good, and Greg Mottola proved that he was a good director as well. A good movie to have in your collection, the film gets an A.

Fast & Furious

Published by normanbates under 1 Edit This

Fast & Furious picks up where the first film left off. Lin brings back the originals for this film. I have to say that I enjoyed the first film a lot more. The new film was so unrealistic. Granted, so was the first one, but not to this extend. That tunnel scene was overdone and far fetched. As was that first scene, used to help us remember the first film. The film however was very entertaining and thats what I believe director justin Lin was going for. Unfortunately, that was his only goal. I probably would not watch this film again because I think I would get dumber do to the horrible dialogue. This film gets an F without a second thought.
