My Grading System
My system is that there is not system. I have received grades all my life, so I want to give some of my own. I will not give a grade on a film based on other films that are similar, however I will compare and contrast them. I do the same thing for films of certain directors. I like to compare their past and present films and decide if they are progressing or if they are getting worse. Due to the fact that I thought that Goodfellas was better than The Departed does not mean that The Departed did not deserve a grade of an A, I just compared them and that’s all. Although I do compare films to each other a lot, I do try to allow the film to stand on it’s own. Based on that, I can compare films that are nothing alike. For example I feel comfortable saying the The Dark Knight was better than Juno. I once heard a critic say that he will only compare a film like Hellboy to a film like X-Men. I do agree that they are in the same genre, but that does not mean that you can’t compare Hellboy to a romantic comedy. Movies are movies and I believe that a film should be seen as an individual film, not a group.
